Chapter Twelve

Babs had already avoided one phone call from Colin McMillan this morning, and was sitting in her kitchen, immersed in creating Craven Wellsmith’s design plan, when the text tone on her phone went off. She ignored it, so the reminder tone went off again, a few seconds later.

“You gonna get that?” Pirate sighed, giving her some seriously dark side-eye.

“Busy,” Babs muttered.

It still felt strange talking to her cat, and stranger still having him respond. There were multiple times a day when she questioned her own sanity, but aside from her hands tingling at odd times, and feeling better on a daily basis than she had in quite a while, the knowledge that she had an odd family history hadn’t really impacted Babs that much.

The text tone dinged again, and Pirate opened his one eye to glare at his human.

“If you don’t check that thing so that it stops waking me up, I’m going to shove it off the table,” he threatened, his tail switching back and forth.

Babs sighed, and reached for her phone.

“You know, you were a lot cuter when you couldn’t talk,” she muttered.

“One of us has to be responsible,” Pirate huffed, turning his back and staring intently into space.

Babs tapped at her screen and read the message there. It was from Delta, Marta’s best friend and assistant.

Hi. Sorry I couldn’t get back with you sooner. I’ve been really busy. I can meet with you at ten o’clock this morning, if that works for you.

Babs glanced at the time on the top of her phone.

“Ten o’clock, holy cow, that only leaves me fifteen minutes to get there,” she exclaimed, shooting to her feet and nearly knocking her chair over in her haste.

“Aren’t you forgetting something?” Pirate asked, sounding bored.

“I don’t have time to feed you right now, sweet boy,” Babs apologized. “I’ll get you the good stuff when I come back, I promise,” she headed for the stairs.

“You have the ability to be ready instantly,” Pirate commented, stopping her in her tracks.

Babs could have sworn the he rolled his one eye.

“Oh, right,” she sighed, biting her lip.

The thought of using her powers to do something as simple as getting ready seemed…wrong somehow, and she knew that if she phrased her request in the wrong way, some very inconvenient things could happen.

“Tick-tock,” Pirate prompted, as Babs stood, indecisive, near the bottom of the stairs.

“I suppose it won’t hurt, just this once,” she sighed and hoped for the best. “I’d like to be dressed in an outfit that’s stylish and appropriate for the office, with accessories, shoes and a matching handbag,” she muttered quickly, feeling guilty.

Babs was relieved to see that, after a warm rush of electricity, which seemed to engulf her from all directions, all of the items that she now wore came from her very own closet, which had been her intention.

“And office-appropriate makeup and hair,” she added, checking out her outfit in the hall mirror. “Oh geez, Pirate,” Babs looked up at the clock, perfectly groomed for the day.
